Vienna has imposed an immediate ban on public grilling as well as smoking near forests in response to severe drought conditions and a sharply increased risk of wildfires. The city announced the measures on Friday, citing the unusually dry weather that has left local forests and meadows highly vulnerable.

City Implements Immediate Fire-Safety Measures

According to city officials, the lack of rainfall in recent weeks has created a critical fire hazard across Vienna’s green areas. As a result:

  • Grilling on public barbecue sites is prohibited until further notice.
  • Smoking and all open flames are banned in forests and forest-adjacent zones.
  • The ban explicitly includes shishas, as their glowing charcoal counts as an open fire source.

The city emphasized that the restrictions will remain in place “until a sustained improvement in weather conditions” is observed.

Officials Warn of “Tense Situation” in Vienna’s Forests

Petra Wagner, Vienna’s Forestry Director, described the situation as highly strained:

“The current dryness is creating a very tense situation in our forests. We appeal to all residents to strictly follow the grilling and fire ban. If you notice smoke or a potential fire during a walk, please contact the fire brigade immediately via emergency number 122.”

To ensure compliance, forest management staff are patrolling wooded areas and monitoring high-risk zones.

Private Gardens: Allowed, But With Caution

Grilling in private gardens remains permitted as long as the property is not located in a designated danger zone near forests. Even there, the city urges residents to exercise maximum caution when handling fire or hot materials.

Why the Ban Matters

Vienna’s fire risk has escalated due to:

  • Prolonged dry weather
  • Low soil moisture
  • Increased temperatures
  • High visitor activity in green areas

These conditions significantly raise the likelihood of wildfires, which can spread rapidly and endanger people, wildlife, and property.
